Soundings Water Elemental Elementals Janine Donoho Books

I bought this novel from Amazon in Kindle and paper formats. Janine Donoho writes with eloquent prose in a strong and definitive style. The story is full of unusual turns of phrase like "a light infantry of paws" and thought-provoking epiphanies such as "once you stretch the rules, the world becomes elastic." This is the kind of novel into which one settles, drawn into its world, surprised by its twists and turns, its brushes of magic, and deep love and respect for the natural world. A satisfying love story with a dash of darkness and mystery.

Soundings Water Elemental Elementals Janine Donoho Books Reviews

This was a delightful mythical fantasy tinged with modern day crime. The storyline centers around a woman who lost a daughter to sea. I found this story to be interesting right from the beginning when her dogs lead her to a special find along the beach. The characters were well defined and varied so much in personality. It's a charming tale. If you enjoy fantasies and mythical creatures, romance, and crime, it's all here in one book and well worth your time to read it. It's a keeper in my collection.
I received an advance review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The story begins with finding the body of a child on the beach. Once I started reading I couldn’t put it down. The author does an excellent job of developing a wide range of characters of all ages with some surprises. You’ll find a little bit of everything ranging from folklore, the ocean, a little magic, sex, body art, PTSD, and serial murders. The author is a very descriptive and visual writer. I recommend reading this excellent book. I’m sure the story will stay with you for days after you have finished reading it.
How does a modern reader connect with ancient archetype? Utterly easily when immersing in Janine Donoho's "Soundings", a masterfully written tale of magical realism. Donoho's language is full of surprising twists, mixing scientific observations with romantic phrasings. The story itself starts rather slowly, like Puget Sound lapping at your feet, but it gains pace and culminates in action, just like the roar of a very high tide. The general atmosphere is rather dark, matching the landscape it is set in. The marvelous accomplishment by Donoho is to weave ancient legend into a realistic story without making you wince or having to stretch your imagination. This powerful narration is a page-turner ... and at the same time you keep rereading passages for their descriptions. Maybe we should look for the fairy tales in our lives more closely?

This book has a nice mix of characters, and the supporting characters are pleasingly three-dimensional. I enjoyed the fantasy and romance and appreciated that the protagonist took a step or two down the wrong moral path before deciding to do the right thing. The author clearly understands that life demands hard choices and that sometimes putting the well-being of others first takes a great effort of will.

The writing is descriptive without being florid and the plot, while predictable is enjoyable. The characters seem remarkably ignorant of Celtic mythology considering their obvious education, but I was willing to suspend my disbelief since the ignorance was vital to the unfolding of the story.

I look forward to reading other books by this author.

Worth owning.
Maggie Updike, an eco-psychologist, lives in a small, close-knit community along the Puget Sound, divorced and childless since her young daughter's death some years before. When she discovers a strange young girl washed up on the beach near her home, she finds herself strangely drawn to the child and to the man who eventually arrives and claims to be the girl's father.

Meanwhile, not everyone in the small town is happy about the developments, especially Jax Smith, the sheriff and a close friend of Maggie's ... with hopes to be more than that. The girl's odd behavior and bizarre tendencies defy easy explanation, and it will take trust and a belief in something greater than what can easily be seen to fully understand the reality the townspeople are facing.

Author Janine Donoho presents the contemporary fantasy novel SOUNDINGS WATER ELEMENTAL

Donoho writes with precision in a style not unlike that of an older generation. In fact, the lush descriptions and close character development in Soundings reminded me of a less dense, more "user-friendly" (if you will) work of literary fiction.

The work, while officially classified as contemporary fantasy, contains elements of many other genres, from light suspense and mystery to small-town romance. Themes explored include loss, grief, love, lust, what is versus what could be, memory, bereavement, psychology, and more.

Maggie is a particularly complex and compelling heroine. Haunted by a slew of demons, some of whom even she can't quite quantify, and driven by not only her professional commitment to her clients but also her compassion and fierce loyalty to the friends she sees as her family, she withstands --- and causes --- some of the most unexpected plot twists in the novel.

Readers used to the very traditional happy ending in a romance novel (although it should be noted that with an ongoing murder investigation underway, this hardly qualifies as "just" a romance novel) may be caught off-guard by the way SOUNDINGS concludes. Though surprising and, perhaps, against the usual grain, however, the ending is true to the deep tone and characters throughout.

A beautifully written, marvelously imagined contemporary fantasy for modern readers!
