THE MARRIAGE TRAP -- A Love for All Seasons Novella
***Previously featured in The Betting Season and A Love for All Seasons
When Miss Patience Findley discovers, at her first ball of her first Season, just how much her father's scandal has affected her chances of marriage, she resigns herself to being alone and dying a spinster. That is, until she hears that her friends' names have landed in the Betting Book at White's. In a moment of desperation, she asks her reprobate cousin to place a bet on her behalf, in hopes of trapping an unsuspecting gentleman into marriage.
Tristan Wallford, Lord Swaffham, loves a good challenge. So when his friend, Rowan Findley, claims that his cousin Patience cannot be cured of her melancholy state, Tristan lays a bet that he will be the one to cure her. He could certainly use the money, after all. But as the game begins, Tristan begins to realize that not only does Miss Findley not need curing, but she might be worth trapping for himself.

Novella length was the perfect length for this story. It's short, simple and sweet - Patience has a lot of trouble living up to her name, especially when it comes to having a gentleman ask her to dance. Any gentleman other than her cousin. Unfortunately her father caused a major scandal when he came home six months after her mother died with a new Indian wife in tow, with a baby that made it obvious he hadn't been faithful to her mother while they'd been in India. Patience is too angry with the situation to countenance staying at home any longer; she wants out and marriage is her only means of doing it. So she convinces her cousin to place a bet that will put a man in a compromising position with her.
What she doesn't count upon is what happens if she starts to have feelings for the man...
This is not a complex plot line but it is a fairly enjoyable one. The fact that it's not complex only means that the length of it works; there's time to develop the characters so that their actions are believable rather than trying to pack too much action into a short story. Overall I found it enjoyable and entertaining; a rather sweet little story that left me feeling rather happy at the end of it.

The Marriage Trap A Love for All Seasons Novella edition by Jerrica KnightCatania Romance eBooks Reviews
Ok, so the only way I cheated was to move The Marriage Trap up on my list of TBR books. I always enjoy Jerrica's books and the temptation was too much to wait to read this. As others have given the books theme, I won't repeat it. The story line is great. What's wrong with a "lady" setting the trap for marriage instead of a man? Nothing in my opinion. Like all Jerrica's books the writing is excellent, flowing easily. She shows regret on the h part, regret and fear of marriage to a man who she thinks doesn't want marriage All in all, another great book.
Patience Findley is having a rough go of it these last 6 months with her mother's sudden death in India and her father showing up with a new and very pregnant wife. Patience doesn't ask any major questions she just assumes the worst and carries those notions around like daddy cheated on mommy and my new step mother is a slut and now lets not forget new baby step brother has made his way into the world. Let's just say that Patience isn't the nicest person right now and she thinks her fathers sudden marriage scandal is ruining her chances at marriage. From reading this book I would say it's not the scandal that's ruining her chances but the nasty vibe she is giving off is doing that on its own. Patience's cousin Rowan is back in town and they meet up at a ball after a little chit chat and a carriage ride home she scheme's of tricking a man any man into marriage. Two of her friends found themselves victims of a bet and have noticed a lot of male attention and a little embarrassment. So Patience has decided that she wants the same and scheme's to find a husband. Well Rowan after a little hemming and hawing has decided to help her.
Rowan meets up with his good friend Tristan (Lord Swaffham) whose money is really tight right now at the club one day where Patience just happens to be. I'm not exactly sure why Patience was at the club. I thought women didn't go to those types of clubs anyway Rowan starts up a conversation that leads to a large bet and a moron toward the alter. Tristan's money is tight and Rowan knows this so Tristan was an easy target. Rowan bet 200 that Tristan couldn't bed his cousin. Not sure why Tristan didn't see this scam coming a mile away. I was thinking to myself run... run... Tristan dead beat friend two meters away. With the scheme in place Patience and Rowan act nonchalant about everything in Tristan's present even Patience plays a little hard to get. I swear be careful what you wish for you just might get it. Patience gets just that a trapped newly acquired fiancée. Tristan meets up with an old friend who happens to tell him a wild story about two friends of Patience that ended up in a betting book and Tristan put two and two together and now he's ready to take a pound of flesh. Tristan is mad that he was tricked by his good friend and the woman he has come to care about. He wants to walk away and let her suffer the consequences but he can't he supposes himself in love with her.
Patience and Rowan Findley came from a trade family and were quite wealthy. They associated with the ton and their children went to the same schools as the children of the ton. They were quite respectable though some might pass them by as they had no title. Each had friends from the aristocratic class though. Patience had three good friends from school who lived near her. They were all going into their first season and they wanted to get married. Patience had little hope since some looked down because of her family's association in trade. Her cousin, being male did nit have the same fears as he had friends and money and was quite good looking.
No one danced with Patience at her first ball. She was also concerned that her father brought scandal to them. Her mother died while in India and on his return about 5 months later, he brought a new stepmother home, a very pregnant one. Her mother had been a stickler for reputation and her father scandalized Patience as it seemed obvious that he had been having an affair before his wife died.
She feared she would never get married and she wanted to get away from her father and his wife. At the ball the night before, something was going on as two mothers quickly withdrew their daughters and left early. When he fiends came to lunch the next day she got them to tell what happened. There were bets placed in a gossip and gaming paper about someone bedding one of the girls before Christmas and another bet about the other one. Those bets led to the two young women being engaged and a fairly quick marriage being arranged.
Patience approached her cousin Rowan to ask him to help her. She wanted a bet to appear indicating someone bet he would bed her by Christmas. Rowan managed to say how unhappy she was at his club because of her father's new wife and that she stood no chance even to be bedded herself. Baron Tristan Swaffham indicated he could get her there but Rowan indicated she was a bit of a prude and would not succeed. They went to place a slightly hefty bet. It was the mist Rowan could afford to lose. At the ball that night he told Patience not to be eager but to hold off and make him work at it. So Lord Tristan sought out dances and time with her. They were a bit attracted or so it seemed. Tristan could sure use her dowry as he had gambled a bit too much lately. Yet he had no intention of being caught where he had to marry. He even lied about other girls he seduced and did not admit doing do. Therefore she had to make sure he was caught in an improper situation. This is s novellete and can be finished in a few hours. It is interesting. There are some mix ups in it.
I enjoyed this story and think you will too. It is better to read this before reading Trust and story. This occurs slightly before. Both are very interesting and deal with men who considered themselves confirmed bachelor's. I think you will enjoy this.
