I loved Christy and Alex in this intense, passionate battle of two wills. But in my humble opinion the descriptions of coal making, gunpowder and bobbin etc were too extensive at the expense of the love and social life of Alex and Christy. I wondered about Alex's feelings for Christy. Did he love her? The story never tells till the end when she is trapped in the mine and he admits that he loves, adores... her. Until then he is harsh, determined to subdue her to his will, even abusive when she just had a baby. Shows no compassion or understanding to her distress over losing Robin nor reach out to her. I admire Christy's courage and determination to help Alex when he is crippled, despite his insults. The final reunion when they find each other was too abrupt; a few lines and the words :"life flowed into him and blazed into the rest of his dead body ...and the lenght of her body clung to his".I wondered ïf it meant that Alex was cured and stood up...In my opinion it badly needed an Epilogue.I Am still wondering and looking for a sequel. Sorry that's my opinion. But I have read a few chapters many times.Tags : The Juniper Bush [Audrey Howard] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I found this book very hard to put down once I began reading it. I liked the main characters in some chapters and yet was disappointed in others, but overall they turned out as I had hoped. The female character, Christy, I admired, as she fought against all the prejudices shown to women in that time as well as managing a family and taking on tasks which she had not been prepared for but I also admired Alex as he had different battles to fight. This is definately a "just one more chapter" book
Having read every one of Audrey Howard's book and enjoyed them all, I have to list this one as one of my favourites.
The main characters, Alex and Christy, are so real and true to their times. The twisting plots, wonderful secondary characters all came to life under Audrey Howard's masterful talent.
I laughed and cried reading this book. The powerful ending left me speechless.
I heartily recommend this book.
