How to Disappear Sharon Huss Roat Books
This book is so freaking important. It’s going to take me a second to formulate slightly coherent thoughts about it, and I need a moment to wipe away my tears. In my core, I resonate so deeply with Vicky. While my anxiety and depression manifests itself differently than hers, I still managed to see myself in her. My e-copy is half yellow from me highlighting all of the sections that spoke to me. The writing was beautiful and raw and wonderful and I’m running out of new words to use as compliments, so I’ll stop there.
This book captures exactly what it is like to live with anxiety and depression. And while it is a heavy story to tell, it’s also so very positive and bright. The story told is so very beautiful, and has a positive message on the subject of mental health.
From the second Vicurious came onto the page, I felt something for it. It was just a simple thing for Vicky, but how she used the platform she was suddenly given was absolutely wonderful.
There is a thriving dark side in social media, but this book reminds me of some of the reasons—some of the people–that make social media a place I want to be.
This book shows the power of one person, spreading hope. It’s gorgeous and amazing and I just can’t even with it. I promise I’m not just going to talk about Vicurious, even though she is a huge part of the story.
I absolutely adored the awkward, adorable, wonderful Lipton. He is lovable and I just…, *aggressively hugs book to chest like a maniac* I just loved this book so much! I can’t even come up with words or coherent thoughts to explain my love for it. It’s a story of hope, love, reconnection. It’s one of the best mental illness stories I’ve read. Ever.
Hands down it’s a favorite. It made me cry happy tears, sad tears, all of the tears. It’s such a wonderful story, and now I’m going to shut up, because y’all need to get your butts over to Amazon and FREAKING PREORDER IT.

How to Disappear Sharon Huss Roat Books Reviews
My son is 12 and loved this book!
But my daughter is.......
A student made me promise I would read this book. I am so glad she did. Being inside Vicky's head as she struggles with feelings that are out of control left me with emotions of my own that ran from laughing out loud to crying at her experiences. A great book to read with a friend, parent, or anyone at all.
It is rare--no, unprecedented--that I have read a book with the words "heartfelt" and "heartwarming" on the back unless immediately followed by explosions, spies, or ninjas.
But I picked up HOW TO DISAPPEAR based on the Twitter buzz, and I really liked it.
Maybe because I see many of my students in Vicky's situation, where they would desperately like to fade into the background and become invisible while simultaneously crave someone to notice them. Sharon Huss Roat gets that and writes a mesmerizing story that I think a lot of my students will love.
This is one of the first books that I picked up and literally knew nothing about it (not even read the blurb). And it's so good, and it always amazes me that adult authors can visualize teen stories perfectly into their YA novels, and I'm always thankful for that.
also, can I just take a moment here to appreciate Lipton? HE IS BOYFRIEND MATERIAL AF
While I was reading this book I was hoping for a happy ending. But then I realised that in real life things don't always end happy, or at least take a lot of work to get in the right direction. I'm so glad that was exactly what happened here. No happy ending, but working hard towards making life more manageable, one step at the time.
First of all, this was a much different book than the one I was expecting. With the description including "she [Vicky] decides to invent a social life by Photoshopping herself into other people’s pictures," I totally thought this was going to be a Catfished style story. I was completely wrong, but I absolutely loved what this story actually is.
While Vicky does Photoshop herself into other people's pictures, her followers know that it's not real. There is something, however, completely different about her account and the way that she approaches people that compels people to hit the follow button.
Vicky is a very anxious high school student. She is undiagnosed, and her mom is not very understanding of Vicky's limitations. (Note I only mention the undiagnosed part because in the context of the book, it means that she struggles all the more.) By creating her Instagram account where no one knows who she really is, she is able to live a life that is less lonely. Along the way, she learns far more about herself than she ever realized. This book also tackles friendship problems and the problems that can come from trying to make it through school with anxiety and making friends.
This is such an important for teens living in the digital age. It is easy to see how others portray their lives on social media and think, "everyone seems to have their lives put together except for me." This book challenges that notion. It challenges the reader to think, "maybe you're not as alone as you may think."
